Nunavut Human Rights Committee

kNu wkok5 WJ8NstoEp4f5

The Nunavut Human Rights Committee was established to address the issues and concerns of equity group members in their workplaces and in society.  The Human Rights Committee specifically targets the issues of Aboriginal, Inuit and Métis workers; workers of colour; workers with disabilities; and gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgendered workers.

Human Rights Committee of the PSAC

November 29, 2005

The Nunavut Human Rights Committee of the PSAC supports the human rights of all Nunavumiut. We are just finishing up our inaugural year.

Our focus was making the NU HR Committee truly representative. We now have active and aware members in each region. And we have been looking for funding, receiving a grant from the Nunavut Area Council.

Our first Face-to-Face meeting dinner was May 5, 2005 at the PSAC North Convention with Lilian Nakamura McGuire, the Public Education Specialist of the Yukon Human Rights Commission.

Our initial awareness-building exercises include publicizing the PSAC's Equity Days and view the marriage legislaiton as a human rights issue. We have also donated $100 each to the following organizations to celebrate human rights in our communities:

- Friends of Pride for their 2005 picnic in Iqaluit
- Whale Cove recreation for June 21 Aborginal Day
- Rankin Inlet's Friends Centre for June 21 Aboriginal Day

Upcoming Year: Focus on Health and Safety

Our first general face to face meeting on Saturday, May 7, 2005 allowed everyone to share ideas and stories. At this meeting of many human rights advocates in Nunavut at the PSAC North Convention, our focus in Year 2 will be Occupational Health and Safety. At the convention, we were reminded of the issue of indoor air quality.

Safe working conditions make for safe workers and families and safe communities.
